What is reverse osmosis?
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a membrane process that uses pressure to push water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing dissolved salts (TDS), metals, and many contaminants.
The most common method is RO. For specific ions, ion exchange may be used; for very high purity, RO followed by EDI (or mixed-bed DI) is typical.
Maintain stable pretreatment, monitor pressure drop and salt rejection, follow correct CIP (clean-in-place) procedures, avoid oxidants on RO membranes, and keep flow/pressure within design limits.
Pretreatment protects downstream equipment and membranes by reducing turbidity, SDI, hardness, iron, chlorine, organics, and biological growth—improving uptime, extending membrane life, and lowering OPEX.

Monitor key parameters: conductivity/TDS, pH, turbidity/SDI, hardness, chlorine, iron/silica (as needed), and microbiology for cooling systems. Use online sensors plus lab confirmation.

What is a desalination plant?
A desalination plant is an industrial facility that removes dissolved salts and minerals from seawater or brackish water to produce usable water—typically drinking water, process water, or boiler/cooling makeup.
UF removes suspended solids and microorganisms but does not remove dissolved salts. RO removes dissolved salts (TDS) and many dissolved contaminants, producing much lower conductivity water.
Ion exchange provides targeted removal (hardness, silica, nitrates, metals) with high effluent quality. It’s reliable for softening and demineralization and can complement RO/EDI for purity
Post-treatment adjusts the final water to meet use requirements—pH correction, remineralization, disinfection, degassing, or final polishing—so the water is stable, safe, and compliant.
